Consistent with ancient tradition, the Celtic knot intertwines endlessly to represent the interconnectedness of the created order in the eternal cycle of life, death, and re-creation. It represents the movement of the Spirit through all things-sometimes visible, sometimes mysterious and hidden. It is the visual representation of the spiritual pilgrimage, a continual cycle of endings and new beginning, and God's encircling protection and love as we make the journey through this life.

In many cultures, the tree is an ancient symbol of constancy, strength and shelter. In the Celtic tradition, trees are revered as a symbol of life itself, witness to both hidden and revealed miracles. Branches reach into the heavenly realms, gathering in life-sustaining air and sunlight. In the same way, roots gather the water and nutrients from deep inside the ground. The trunk connects the earthly and the spiritual in the present moment, providing shelter and protection for all the creatures of the earth season after season. It is this quality of eternality that gives the tree its status as a "witness;" in legal survey descriptions. A solitary tree at or near the corner of the site is still used to guide the way to the surveyor's mark when, as seasons pass, the marker itself becomes hidden or buried, and perhaps lost entirely. The tree is the point from which guidance is given so that the true marker can be found.

When combined, these images become a "WitnessTree;" a gathering and sheltering-place, providing strength, encouragement, and insight for those seeking a clearer path, or perhaps the true spiritual marker for their lives.
